“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.”
Exodus 20:2-3 (ESV)

As Christians, we are taught to worship only God. This is the very first of the Ten Commandments given to Moses and the Israelites. I always assumed it was for the obvious reason that God is the only true God. All other gods are either nothing at all or demons who oppose God. And those are good reasons.

We worship for a variety of reasons: gratitude, love, fear of punishment, or promise of blessings. I found another reason as I read this verse. God frees us from slavery.

Yes, you and I who have likely never been physically enslaved, experience slavery to what we allow to control us. One look at my own life and the proof of concept becomes clear. Worshiping anything but God creates chains and binds us to the thing we worship.

When I’m seeking status, I become a slave to what everyone else thinks. When I seek distraction from real life, I become chained to my social media, television, or even a great book. When I seek to prove my financial success, I become trapped by the stuff I own.

Worshiping God frees us from all these chains. When we choose to have no other god before Him, we choose to seek His approval (which He willingly gives). We look to Him to confirm our “success” or “status”. He calls us His children! There is no higher praise, status, or confirmation of our acceptance than this.

When we realize that God’s love for us is so great that all of His commandments are for our good and growth, we can willingly offer Him obedience and worship, especially when we don’t understand.

God invites us to worship Him and experience freedom from the chains of this world. We worship with our praise, work, thoughts, and actions. Living becomes an act of worship when we realize the freedom we are granted by following Jesus.

Father, thank you for loving us and showing us that all Your commandments bring life and freedom. Teach us to worship You in Spirit and truth and continue drawing us closer to You each and every day. Show us anything that we place before You, anything that keeps us in chains. You are the One True God. May we worship You with all we have. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Spread the spark of hope everywhere you go,

Michelle

I want to follow Jesus! How do I get started?

“This is how we know that we live in Him and He in us: He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.
1 John 4:13-15

If you are ready to join the family of God, simply believe and ask. You can choose your own words or pray the prayer below. God hears your heart, simply confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and let the Spirit lead you.

“Father, I want to be yours. Forgive me of my sins. I believe that you sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, to die in my place. I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior and thank you for the gift of salvation through Him. I invite the Holy Spirit into my heart and surrender my life to You. In Jesus name, Amen.”

Feel free to spend time just talking to God and sharing your heart with Him. Let Him speak to you and listen as He leads you forward into new life. Welcome to the family.
