Pride

October 10, 2022

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Proverbs 16:18

“When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom.”
Proverbs 11:2

“By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom.”
Proverbs 13:10

But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

“For all this in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.”
1 John 2:16

Pride. One of the devil’s great snares for us humans. Pride caused Eve to take the forbidden fruit, convinced that it would make her like God. Pride causes us to overlook and even applaud sin. Pride drives us further from God and closer to self-destruction.

Pride blinds us to our own faults. Pride tells us to accept our fallen nature. Pride roars at anyone who dares warn us of the dangers of following its path. Pride convinces us to worship ourselves.

Pride is deceptive. Pride is cunning. Pride will take down the masses who follow its call.

Pride promises greatness. Pride encourages self-indulgence. Pride pretends that you are in control.

In the end, those who follow in the wake of Pride’s grand parade will fall. The Truth will prevail. God’s justice will be served. God’s holiness will be called to witness against those who gave themselves to Pride. God’s sovereignty will no longer be challenged.

Until then we must remember that God’s people have a choice.

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
2 Chronicles 7:14

This is what we are called to do. Humble ourselves, pray, seek God’s face, turn from our wicked ways. Do this, face the pride in your own life and ask God to heal you. The world’s pride will continue on its current trajectory, but we are not powerless. Our God is all powerful and is able to turn back the tide. Will we wait in silence and apathy or will we humbly acknowledge God’s sovereignty and ask Him to intervene?

Only God can heal our land, maybe He’s simply waiting for His people to do their part.

May God open our eyes and spark a flame of cleansing for our fallen world.
