“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”
Galatians 4:4-5 (ESV)
Child of God, celebrate your family! Celebrate your adoption! I never tire of being called daughter—by both my earthly parents and my Holy Father. Being part of God’s family is an honor, not a right. God chose to invite us into His family (at great personal cost, I might add). And while that invitation is for everyone, we must all make the individual decision to accept or reject the gift. If you have not checked the “Yes” box on your RSVP, please take a moment to do so now.
God whispers to our hearts: Here I am, take my hand, let me be your Father. Within our souls is the desire to be loved and accepted. We get a distorted view of being part of God’s family when we view it through the dysfunction of our earthly families. No family is perfect because no human is perfect.
What we can know is that God will fix all those broken pieces and fill the missing parts of our earthly families. His love is unconditional, His guidance is unfailing, and His grace is unchanging.
I stand in awe of the God who chose me to be His daughter. I didn’t earn it. I don’t deserve it. I fail to be the “perfect” daughter every day. But He’s still my faithful, loving, even doting, Father. His love is gentle when my heart is broken and firm enough to offer discipline and guidance when I go astray. He always leads me back home to Him.
They say you can’t choose your family. But God chose us. He chose the weird, wired, outrageous, overboard, reserved, and ridiculous. He doesn’t shy away from our faults but opens His arms and offers acceptance and restoration.
The privilege of being called a child of God comes with some responsibilities. God asks us to grow in our faith and trust in Him. He calls us to become more like Him. More loving, more forgiving, more patient, more hopeful, more enduring. And we get to practice this with our earthly families.
Embrace the cousin who drives you crazy. Accept the sibling you just don’t understand. Be patient with the slow movers, clumsy, and oblivious. Show love to everyone around you.
What if you are that family member who feels like you don’t quite fit in? Show up anyway and show off the love of God. Ask God to show you how to fully engage with your family. Do your best to set your insecurities aside or be more empathetic to others. And when they hurt you, give them grace knowing that they are also doing their best. Even if they aren’t in a place where they can return that grace to you, keep loving them and when necessary, forgiving them.
Above all, know that God loves you unconditionally. He created you! He chose you. He adopted you. We are children of God and have a Father who understands us and never gives up on us. So even if your family is difficult, far away, or non-existent, remember that you are also part of God’s family.
God is near. Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us. You are loved, accepted, and treasured. God chased after us even as we were running from Him. Our adoption into God’s family is worth celebrating. Joy to the world! The Lord came for us. Jesus came as the adoption papers and the Holy Spirit is waiting to sign them upon our acceptance. He’s waiting for you. Don’t delay. Today, accept the greatest gift of all and receive your promised adoption!
Father, we thank you for adopting us into Your family. We are so grateful to be Your daughters and sons. Help us to embrace our place in the family and turn to you with confidence in Your acceptance and good will towards us. We love You and thank you for sending Your Son to be our Savior. In Jesus’s name, Amen.

I want to follow Jesus! How do I get started?
“This is how we know that we live in Him and He in us: He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.
1 John 4:13-15
If you are ready to join the family of God, simply believe and ask. You can choose your own words or pray the prayer below. God hears your heart, simply confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and let the Spirit lead you.
“Father, I want to be yours. Forgive me of my sins. I believe that you sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, to die in my place. I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior and thank you for the gift of salvation through Him. I invite the Holy Spirit into my heart and surrender my life to You. In Jesus name, Amen.”
Feel free to spend time just talking to God and sharing your heart with Him. Let Him speak to you and listen as He leads you forward into new life. Welcome to the family.
